Free play on steering wheel

My corolla has an excesive amount of free play on the steering wheel,is this caused by worn cv joints, the rack and pinion or both? Thanks.

it is probably the outer tie rods

less likely the inner tie rods or the rack&pinion

do the tie rods 1st, your tires will wear and you'll have some difficulty steering the car as they get worse.

sterring wheel play can be from ANY part of the system. Inner and outer tie rods, the rack itself or even the universal that couples the rack to the steering shaft. Have someone move the wheel back and forth while you look for parts that have slop.
