Hello all,
Note: This is a auto tranny
I am new so I tried to check around on the forums before I posted but didn't find all the info I wanted so I thought I would just tell you all my problems. I have the o/d light blinking and that causes the check engine light to come on. I tried counting the blinks but there is no pattern. I tried to take it to 3 different places but none can seem to get a code because it is intermittent and once you turn the car off it goes away. Even while driving it will stop and then come on maybe later while driving. When I drive the car sometimes when I drive what will happen is it seems like the transmission can't make up it's mind what gear to be in. Once it is in a gear the car will drive fine. But sometimes it will just pop out and I have to wait a second or two for it to get right. I tend to baby the tranny now because if i give it two much gas at one time it throws a fit kinda. Timing belt was changed at 99k. There is 116k on the car right now. Has a very ruff idle but i think that may just be either bad plugs or engine mounts.
Ok I live on a hill so i took it to the bottom on flat ground and checked everything. The fluid is clean. But on the way up I kinda floored it and and I think it stayed in first the whole way, I was in the red at probably 6k or 7k I think before I let off. This is pretty much a gear changing problem. But this time the o/d light didnt blink, the check engine came on.
Since you cant get codes and its intermittent, go crawling under the car and remove and put back on every connector you can find on the trans. corrosion or wiring damage can cause that sort of trouble. Look at the condition of the connectors and make sure they are clean and fit tightly.
Or get rid of it and get a Corolla instead, Unfortunately if you try to sell it you won't get much.
First of all, these cars have the same drivetrain. I don't even know why you posted that??? At least do some homework first. You're not helping at all.
The problem does sound strange, my first thought is the shift solenoids, but since your having trouble in all gears, I would check the throttle cable and valve for being out of adjustment. Also check the transmission governor. I don't think it's the nuetral safety switch.

True, they do. Question. Toyota supplied a V-6 engine to Lotus. Can the Lotus now be classified as a Toyota?
^ WTF? Let's just get something straight...NO!!!!!!!!! And for your info, the Geo Prizm and Toyota Corolla were built in the same plant in a joint venture between Toyota and GM called NUMMI. GM was wanting to learn to make better compact cars. And Toyota was glad to help to get there foot in the door with one of the first US based plants that builds Toyota's. These cars were built side by side. And what he means is that the exterior design was different, but the chassis and drivetrain remained the same! So you may want to consider retracting your statement...or better yet, just stay out of this thread all together. Thread jacking is not considerate to the person who started the thread...so let's stay on topic.
Point taken. It is my opinion. By the way fact, The Corolla is still being produced and doing well, Fact, The Prizm is not. I'm done with my two cents.
Regarding your problem it is probably tranny related or even computer. Like one poster said, have you checked you fluid noting the color and also if there are any particles in it? For your sake I hope it's not serious, because the cost to fix can be a lot of money. Good luck.
