I would start by checking all fuses, and then check to see if the brake lamps work. I had a bad brake light switch do this to me once on my 92. Also if any soda or anything has been spilled by the shifter it may have gummed up the works.

Did you get it to shift?? I know all of the automatic tranny cars have a button next to it that you push in with your key and it lets you shift. I have used it a couple of times lol

yeah I found the manual overdrive and have used it a few times. Just curious if my problem was a common one or at least learn what it might be so I dont get screwed over at the shop. I have a Haynes manual and it keeps going back to saying it needs to be taken into a shop for the repairs. Dont like doing it but if I have to...

Take apart the shifter assembly. Make sure there isn't any rust or things like that.

Also check all your fuses. (Kickbox AND under the hood)
