Question about torque wrench

I want to purchase a torque wrench (the type that clicks at a certain torque setting) so I can torque my lug nuts and other things correctly

The one I am considering is 1/2'' drive, 24'' long with torque settings from 40 to 250 lbs-ft

My question is let's say I want to unbolt something that is stuck really tight, does that mean that I won't be able to apply a torque more than 250 ft-lbs ? in other words, the mechanisms will start slipping once I apply more than 250 lbs-ft and I will never be able to remove the bolt?

so I cannot use the torque wrench as a braker bar to remove something tighter than 250 lbs-ft?

Right, torque wrench is 'ON' Only and you must set it back to zero when done...

its not really recommended but i've seen people do it. best bet is to use an actual breaker bar or an impact wrench to loosen a really tight fastener. most torque wrenches cost a decent amount of money and should only be used to manually tighten down fastners to an exact degree, u might damage the tool using it any other way. also if the wrench is rated for 250ft lbs of torque and u want to tighten something to more than that amount, u will need to buy a torque wrench with a higher ft- lbs rating capacity.

Sounds like your looking at my mountain torque wrench. It works great and does the job. Keep dreaming if you think you will find a better torque than 250 on a 1/2" drive. If You require greater than 250 then guess what, a 1/2" breaker bar won't help either and based on my experience, the torque wrench is much more supported to handle 250 than my 1/2" Husky bar with a cheater. Buy the 250 wrench
...or buy a 3/4" torque wrench for $500.

edit: you should have asked the general section. They have a lot of valuable info on tools.

If you're just unbolting something, use a regular wrench or breaker bar and add a pipe over it

using one to loosen things will ruin the calibration, not that cheap ones are finely calibrated to begin with but it'll get worse than it already is.

yea, don't use it to remove anything. Oh and if your using it only on our cars mainly, try to find one with a lower range than 40-250. Our cars mostly are torqued within 0-100lbs.

I have a nice small 3/8 drive click type. I think it's 0-80lbs and will do every bolt on the Corolla.
