Shaky while stopped in Drive

Hi,

I got a 1996 Toyota Corolla DX Plus, 1.6L, With auto transmission. The Car Currently have 200, 809 Km. For the past couple months or so, when stopping at a stop light, stop sign, etc. while in drive, the car gets a little shaky, but when put into neutral, park, during driving and coasting it's fine.

So I was wondering if anyone could give me some clues that could cause that.

my friend said I should try cleaning the EGR valve/system.

Today I:
- Changed my oil
- checked my air filter(it is still clean as i changed it last month
- Spark plugs, wires, distributor and rotor changed a few months back
- Transmission oil changed
- Coolant Flush
- Past 2 gas tanks fill ups i put in 91 octane

and it hasn't given me any changes/lowering of shaky or vibrating(?)

thanks,
Chris

Hope you didn't change the whole distributor because that's something you only change once it's broken. It could be the coil though if you've not changed that. Besides checking the EGR, also check the PCV valve. The PCV valve will rattle if you shake it. If it doesn't, clean/replace it. Does it run rough once you first start after it's sat out in the rain/snow? Shaking at low or high RPMs could be a sign your motor mounts are going. Observe the engine visually; it should shake a little but not excessively.

That said, also keep in mind it's not uncommon for an engine to shake a little at really low RPMs, as they tend to smooth out as RPMs go up.

Hi,

thanks for the quick responds. The whole distributor I changed, I always thought it had to be changed with the spark plugs, but thanks for the tip.

Cold starting the car in snow, rain or low temp. the car runs fine, just in "Drive" it's a bit shaky. A friend who owns the exact same car as me, he gave me a lift home from a party yesterday night, all the maintanece was don't according to the dealership and at the dealership, his car at 220K km is running like it came out of the dealership.

thanks,
chris
