Odometer Acting Screwy

Lately I've noticed I've not been getting the miles I should by a LOT. I wanted to make sure my odometer was working fine. I put in my Garmin GPS and made note of the odometer before I left. When I started the car the fuel level as at half (on a level surface) but jumped up between the quarter and half way marks.

Here is where it gets more interesting; for the first 10 miles or so, the odometer was slightly slow, but from there on it was fast. I started with 114, went 48 miles, and it read 170. My fuel gauge settled at half when my trip was over. My speedometer also seemed to be off by about 1-2mph from where it should be.

What is going on? I have been getting a Code 42 (Vehicle Speed Sensor not receiving signal at engine speeds between 3,000-5,000 rpm) on the check engine light, but the speedometer continues to work even at those engine speeds as does the odometer. I've always had this issue with this gauge cluster since I put it in around June, and it had 252k on it. So is it the cluster, VSS, ECU, or something else?

The speed sensor in your transmission is probably bad, or that cluster is fucked.

I have an extra one, for a 3 Speed A101L trans. NON ELECTRONIC TRANS.

I'd inspect the cluster if I were you for any noticeable bad things (ie cracked solder joints or any damage to the circuits on the back or the actual gauges. At which point, if nothing is found to be out of the ordinary, I would replace the VSS... seeing as the CEL is pointing to it I'd imagine that would be the likely source of the problem.

hmm, well the speedometer and odometer/trip meter are 100% linked, so I don't know how one would work without the other.

they're linked inside the speedo by plastic gears. you could have a damaged gear inside of there or some other part of the mechanism.

The odometer works, it just acts screwy. How do I even GET to this VSS? I see it, but I have no room to get to it. I took off the top part of the air intake but even then didn't have room due to the coolant hoses in the way. Is there some trick I missing on this thing? I have an extended screw driver but that can't reach it either. I'm hesitant to do this thing as like they say, something that is hard to get out is even harder to get back in (especially when you consider I can't even get my damn hand near it)

the VSS you may get lucky and be able to pull it up, but highly un likely. you may need to drop the trans or pull off the back panel to the case to push it through.

I still have mine if you want it.

Alright, I managed to get to it by leaning over the intake manifold and was even able to remove the electrical connector. What screws though actually hold it in? The Philips head ones or the hex head ones? Is there a gasket I need to replace when I pull it or not? I may just leave it to my mechanic though if it's hard to get out... not going to drop the trans myself, and it needs some other stuff only he can do too (fuel lines).

You might as well have him do it, if he is going to be reaching around in your engine....
