I have a 1996 Corolla 1.8 (will turn 145,000 miles today). Silly question, the shocks and struts on this car are OEM, when should they need replacing (I know that shocks don't last forever, but not noticing any problem with the ride or handling of the car itself). I know that I need a new rack/pinion unit for it (and I replaced the exhaust manifold less than 5K miles ago, it was also OEM).
Gee maybe I should have made a video showing a BAD car! I'll also add that struts can be bad AND STILL HAVE DAMPING! I had replaced some in an old tercel and after a few months the car handled badly. Grabbing front end parts and shaking them I saw the strut rod moving sideways in the body!
After that many mile, and if it fits in your budget, change them. Toyota struts arent hard to do. Spend the money for KYB's or better. I've had nothing but trouble with Garbiel and Monroe.
but the monroe comes with life time warranty
and kyb u have to buy online
do they give warranty
so many people i have spoken to in have said monroe sucks, and many members on this forum have had no luck with them, but i can honestly say they haven't given me any problems, not one. i got all 4 of 'em on my 95. i wasn't looking for anything special when i bought new shocks i just needed new ones cuz mine started to leak. To each his own
Years back I installed some KYB's on my old chevy van. I was disappointed with the ride quality and told a sales rep for KYB that. He shipped me a fresh set which worked well. Problem handled and no problems after that and hmmm about 150k miles. No problem with warranty.
Lifetime warranty means nothing if you have to replace parts multiple times when they fail.

My thoughts exactly.

thats what my mechanic saif tht he never had any problem with monroe
which shocks did u put in ur car
the basic one?? tht cost around 60 each i guess
i got the sensatrac kind. i also got new strut mounts. the sensatrac cost about $90 now per strut, i bought these 2 years ago so they were around $78 back then. struts are some of the most expensive parts to buy cuz u always gotta buy in pairs or all 4.
I had Monroe struts on my wagon when I got it and had no problems with it but they only had 20k miles in them so far. I'm not sure which ones they are but they're blue. The previous owner got ripped off seeing that the mechanic sold them for 148 each looking at the receipts! My car is lowered now so the Monroe's are just sitting in the garage with the oem springs.
That one person is right...the 7th gens are probably the easiest car to work on especially the struts. I did it myself and had no experience with cars before and it only took me 5 hours to do all 4.
