Time to change the exhaust manifold, 1993 1.6 liter...

Hard job? It has a crack in it and I think it's time to change it out. Best source for this with gaskets?

Also, what type of socket for the wierd looking bolts on the bottom of the manifold?

Oh, automatic transmission, if it matters.

Thanks a lot.

those are studs, iirc 14 or 17mm nuts on the studs. i know at the manifold they are 14mm and you need to move the alternator out a little bit to get in there with a box wrench.

also in Bitter's pic. Towards the bottom of the manifold some have a nut on the lower left side that is connected to a support bracket. In case you remove the main 5 exhaust nuts and it won't come off for some reason. Also when you put it back on. Slip the studs from the exhaust pipe onto the manifold first...then bolt up the manifold to the head

Usually it is right down the middle between the 2nd and 3rd pipe.

My standard manifold decided to crack on me about 6-months ago - Ended up getting it welded but knew it was eventually going to happen again so I decided to get a custom manifold made from mild steel. I bought it second hand for a mere $40 ($28 USD), including the front pipe. The guy who originally had it got it HPC coated to keep the engine bay temps down.

I tried that job on friday and failed. The bolts were rusted so badly, so when the nuts began to strip, I handed it to my mechanic.
Best source is ebay. You can get a whole set for $80. Most of them ship free within the states.

Know what you mean - Mine were a real pain in the ass to get off. I ended up taking it to my local exhaust shop so they could undo the bolts for me (much easier with a hoist and air tool). They didn't charge me anything and it made the job a hell of a lot easier.

Exhaust work is typically next to impossible without a torch to loosen rusted fasteners. Sometimes patience with penetrating fluid can help to get them off. In any case use 6 point sockets to avoid stripping nuts.

yeah very often we end up needing to heat exhaust stud nuts up with the oxy acetylene torch in order to remove them with a socket and ratchet, because they just corrode alot

bolts do also, ones that attach exhaust manifolds to heads

fun..

dry rusty corrosion
