Question 1996 1.6 water pump questions

Hi, I'm new to the site. My 1996 Corolla is loosing coolant, it is dripping steadily out from under the water pump. I just got this car and am unfamiliar with Toyotas, but have a good deal of experience working on Chevy and Ford trucks. How involved is this going to be? Am I going to have to remove the timing belt to get to the pump? It looks like a tight squeeze, can I get some room in there by taking off the front tire and splash guard? Thanks for any help.

Jake, welcome to the site.
It is tight but not too bad in terms of modern cars. A couple of helpful hints are to loosen the water pump pulley bolts before removing the belt since the belt tends to help keep the pulley from turning as you loosen the bolts. You do not need to touch the timing belt since the water pump is not driven by the timing belt on your Corolla. Definitely remove the passengers side front wheel and splash guard to gain access to some of the timing belt cover bolts.

I ran into a bit of trouble. I removed the front wheel and splash guard, but I can't find any way to get a wrench or socket on the 10mm bolts that hold the water pump pulley on. The inner passenger side fender is maybe an inch from that pulley. Is there a special tool to get these or do I have to loosen the motor mounts and lift that side of the engine?

Ok, also the Timing belt replacement sticker on the engine says that is was replaced 6000 miles ago by the previous owner, and it also says "WP replaced". If the water pump is only 6000 miles old I don't understand why it is leaking. Maybe the previous owner did not tighten it down enough. I can't see exactly where it is leaking but it has coolant running down the block underneath the water pump.

Must be different on your car. I was able to get the water pump pulley bolts out, I had to turn the engine over until the bolts were at 8 o'clock position, then I could just barely get them with a wrench. But there isn't enough room to even pull the pulley off the water pump. I got the harmonic balancer bolt out, today I'm hoping my wheel puller will work to get it off.

Hey man im changin my water pump too, and i ran into the same problem of not being able to get pump out.
If uve loosened the pulley bolts, just let it hang there, its fine. Then unbolt the bracket for the oil dipstick, once u take the bracket off, the entire dipstick assembly pulls out. After uve done that, u should be able to get all the bolts out, and pull the water pump out the bottom, its a tight squeeze getting it out with the pulley still on, but it will come out.

But you do need to take that dipstick assembly out.
Hope this helps.
