I have a '96 corolla and the A/C compressor isn't kicking on. I have checked all fues and they seem fine, I am not sure about relays or really what relays run the A/C compressor. The light on the A/C switch in the dash lights up and the fan kicks on but the compressor clutch doesn't engage... HELP PLEASE!!!!
Yes it used to work all the time, the clutch just isn't engaging at all. I don't think the outside temp would matter wether or not it came on, but it did get into the high 60's low 70's today
see if you can move it by hand... if it doesnt move... well.... consider the worst.

Yes the compressor turns freely, I talked to a local shop and they also said that it was more than likely a low pressure situation, yet they want $40 just to check the pressure...
40 dollars to check it?? Man you can buy those cheap refrigerant checker for like 10 dollars and do it yourself. Just as accurate. Yeah, it should be low refrigerant but you should make sure before adding more in so you do not over-add refrigerant. Check on the low port and not the high port. It is labeled L and H so its not confusing or anything.
Correct me if i am wrong but I believe the way to check the refrigerant is to let the car warm up, turn on the a/c to max and check the low port of the refrigerant.

Ok, I bought a can of refrigerant and it came with a gauge. Correct me if I am wrong but all I have to do is make a set of jumper wires to get the a/c clutch to catch and top off the refrigerant on the low pressure side...
Ok, so i jumped a 12v line to the compressor and added the coolant and it works fine. I am sure this means I have a small leak some where that I will have to find soon but it works!
Ok so I got in the car today turned on the a/c and there was a hissing noise from under the dash.. The compressor kicked on but wouldn't get cold, and now I guess it has leaked so much that the pressure is to low to allow the pressure switch to turn on the compressor... Any Ideas?

Hissing sound...obviously a leak. You can try a leak detector on next recharge to help find the leak. I wouldn't recharge the system again until you add leak detector to find the leak. Then repair the leak. Recharge for the fourth time.
Haha yeah I think I will just take it to a A/C shop, as much as I want to tear into the thing and find it, I dont want to get in to deep and not be able to fix the problem and still have to take it to a shop... I might try to look at it this weekend, but will most likely take it to a shop... Any Ideas on what may cause the leak and what is prone to go in the a/c?
