The pressing the brake thing, that shouldn't happen. The reason for that is a wiring short most commonly caused by melted bases on taillight bulbs. The AC controls are illuminated by a single #74 bulb (pop the trim off, then the clear diffuser and it's sitting right there) , the emergency flasher and rear defroster buttons by special neo-wedge bulbs that are almost impossible to find (remove the switch, they're on the top and bottom), and the automatic shifter by a #194 (remove trim ring, unclip shifter face, pull out bulb). That should cover everything in the center console.
