gen 7 Gear selector light

How do I change the light for the gear selector in a 97 corolla?

This applied to my 97 geo prizm so your mileage may vary.

You have to remove the plastic center console thing (obviously the one surrounding the gear selector). Held down by two screws on the sides right by the seats and then there are 3 screws in that rectangular cup holder area also. Then lift up and carefully detach from the center console plastic (one by the radio). Those two pieces snap fit together so be careful not to break 'em.

I forget from there but I believe you may have to remove a snap-on cover of some sort to access the bulb or you may just be able to get at it upon removing that center console piece.

Remove the trim from around the shifter, then carefully unsnap the shifter face and turn it to the side, if you look down the bulb is in there. Hopefully you have long fingers because the bulb is a little awkward to get at. Some like to remove the center console, which is held on by three screws in the cubby and one on each side just in front of the driver's and passenger's seats.

What bulb size will I use here? And do you know if an LED can fit here??
I'll be doing the same thing soon, since my gearselector light flickers.

Yeah you can stuff a led in there might have to play around with the plug though.

I forgot what bulb size it was I just plugged in one I had lying around in the garage with the same socket type.

Perhaps someone else can chime in.

If I remember correctly a 194 goes there. I changed mine a couple of years ago and it was a real pain. I don't think LEDs would be good there because it might not light it up evenly.

There's a DIY floating around in the 8th gen forum, but the process is pretty much the same for the 7th gen.

Search and you'll come across it.

I see. I'll save the LED's for the gauges then. I think I ahve a 194 somewhere. If its the same as the one in the dome light.

The dome light is a festoon bulb, 3175 is the number I think.

194 for the shifter light, 31 mm festoon bulb for the roof light.

I put LEDs in my shifter (1 per symbol) very old pic:

i pulled out the dash and found four 194s as well. and the trunk lamp is a 194. I'm gonna replace them all with 6 LEDs.
Does anyone know what lights up the little red needles?

The needles are illuminated by the same 194s that illuminate the gauges.

So they DON'T have their own dedicated bulb, and the whole cluster only has the 4 bulbs?
