Where is ignition module on 93 corolla?

Hi all,

Our 93 Corolla (AE92) would not start the other day due to lack of spark. Called the RACV and he tested the coil, and then the whole thing started working again! Problem is that he reckons it will break down again, as he sees this all the time. He suspected either the coil or the ignition module to be the problem.
My questions is, where is the ignition module on this model? And what does it look like?

I would like to replace both just to be sure.

TIA

If your Corolla is a four door sedan in 93 it is an AE10 series, not an AE92 which is a two door coupe of the prior generation. These cars have no external ignition box. You just have the coil which is mounted on the distributor which sits on the right top side of the engine, and is black with the four spark plug wires coming off of it. I've not done the coil though so I can't say how it comes off, but make sure to change the plug wires (one at a time) if they have not been changed lately, and then change the distributor cap and rotor. Btw, what is RACV and how did he test the coil? You just don't poke an ignition coil to have it start working again and then have it stop at a later date unless it was just a loose connection somewhere.

Thanks CJRocker. It is the 2 door (AE92). RACV is the roadside assistance service for Victoria, they come to get you outta trouble! The guy checked to see if there was current on one of the wires coming from the distributor, and found that there was none. He then took off the distributor cap to text the coil (I think with a multimeter) and it suddenly worked again. He reckons they see this all the time and it's a bit of a strange occurence that's hard to explain, but that the problem usually returns quite soon after. Doesn't make much sense to me, but I suppose I'll just replace all the bits and be done with it. Hope there's no loose wires!

Thanks so much for your advice.

I misread your post and location. Is it a 93 or is it older? What motor? The AE92 is the GT-S coupe two door with flip up head lamps and a 4AGE and was made prior to 93. A two door after 93 is an AE10x series and does not have the flip up headlamps. I don't know what they would have called it in your market but would have been a Levin I think. Either way, what I said should work.

AE92

Electronic components can be flaky during heat cycles. Check for bad connections in distributor plug(s) first. It may have been a bad connection that when disturbed made a connection and you car came back to life.

Thanks again CJRocker and also speedy25. The info given will help enormously in solving the problem. I'll check for faulty connections and if I find nothing I'll wait to see if fault returns and then diagnose it properly.
Cheers guys!

sounds like broken wire inside of insulation to me. will look fine from outside but is broken inside.

try wiggling 12v wires around at the coil and module and such

try this with engine running if at all possible to see if you hit a certain wire and it stumbles or misses or dies.

this has happened in the past

also check all ground wires on body rad supports firewall etc

make sure clean and tight and wires not brittle at connector ends etc,

just my $.02 and advice

trying ot help any way i can, with over 16 years personal experieice runnin a repair shop and wrenching on billions of different vehicles over the years.

good luck!!!
