There was only 1 USA version of the 4A-GZE, it was the AFM/Distributor version used in the 1988-1989 MR2. It had 8.0:1 compression, with a largeport head and the low-boost SC12. This combination made 140hp, the same as the Japanese-spec MR2. The emissions equipment on the engine had no ill-effect on power at all.
Versions with 165/170hp had 8.9:1 compression, with a smallport head and the higher-boost SC12, along with a better exhaust setup (AE101). They were also equipped with a MAP sensor and distributor-less ignition (DLI). These were used on the 1990-1995 AE92/AE101 GT-Z.
Also, even though the 4A-GZE in the MR2 was RWD, it is essentially a FWD transverse setup mounted in the rear of the car. The big difference is the shift linkage on the transmission, most everything else is FWD friendly.
