Just got a...

Okay, so while not EXACTLY a Corolla, I snagged a 95 Geo Prizm for cheap. Don't know too much about these, but basically, it has a cracked exhaust manifold, runs like crap (and that's AFTER the new plugs and disty cap), and it's purple. But like I said, it was cheap and I couldn't pass it up.

Pressure tested the motor, it's good.
Gets fuel. Starts up. Runs really rough. What do you think the chances are that a new manifold and some plug wires will make this thing run well again?

Pictures to come.

I think so, a friend actually was the one who did it, but I don't know why he wouldn't do them both at once.

I'm assuming the cracked manifold would cause a pretty large problem with this running smoothly.

Performance wise, the leaking manifold wouldn't be doing you any favors as you're losing back pressure, but it shouldn't cause any major problems in terms of idling or driving. It definitely requires replacing but try giving the IACV and throttle body a good clean first as these occasionally get clogged up with carbon deposits which makes the engine run rough.

Will do, thanks for the heads up. I will let you know what happens.

And this is kind of a dumb question I guess, but which engine does this have, the 1.6 or 1.8? How do I tell which is which? The sticker on the underside of the hood said (I think, not at home to verify) 4A-LC or something like that. And what is the real difference in appearance between the 2? The manifolds are compatible, I guess. I know the 1.8 has more displacement, too.

look at the oil pan....it's either 1 piece or two piece. 1 piece is 1.6

Also, I'm not certain...but I think all U.S. wagons came with 1.8

And last, another way to tell is if you have auto with overdrive. I don't know of any auto tranny's with over drive mated with a 1.6
