Starts but idles badly.

1997 Corolla

I was driving home the other day and my engine started making a bad tapping sound, When i got it home it had changed into more of a knock and the mil was on and the code was a cyl. 4 misfire. Any ideas on what it could be?

Check all the basic stuff first: sparkplugs and gaps, plug wires, distributor cap, distributor rotor.

By your audio description, it sounds like you are losing a rod. Unless you find something obvious, you'll be dropping the pan for an inspection.

Hows your oil consumption/level been?

If it is a rod, ring, or something of that nature you're better off just getting an engine from a junker. That said if you run a compression test and nothing is wrong, I wouldn't touch it.

As mentioned above, do the basic stuff & check for a vacuum leak (broken hose)...
