Canada Safe Weight for Roof?

Hi,

I was given a pair of roof racks for my '94, and I was wondering how much weight I can load onto the roof (safely)? I can't find anything in the owner's manual or in my Chilton manual.

Thanks.

Ask the previous owner what the weight capacity of the racks are.

I was amused not too long ago seeing a US made SUV with a factory roof rack AND a large sticker on the back proclaiming that the roof was not made to handle loads and you shouldnt put anything on the roof!

A better place to look for weight limits is the rack manufacturer's specs.

The rack that I purchased from Toyota said 75kg. But from my experience, anything more than 30kg and the car's handling is affected quite substantially. A windsurfing board and two bicycles, I'd guess a total of 40+ kg and it felt like a "tower on wheels"

They feel that way without anything on the top.

If the weight is evenly distributed, it's probably ok up to 100lbs or so. I wouldn't carry a fridge up there, or anything extremely large.
