is there a definite distinction between the 1156 and 1157 bulbs for the rear lights??
A local car parts store near me has a sylvania brighter white 1156 bulb and I was wondering if I can use that brighter white 1156 bulb for the 1157 sockets.
Is there anything I should know like whether or not the 1157 sockets will support the whiter 1156 bulbs??

THe 1157 has 2 filaments inside and 2 contacts on the base, on for bright and one for dim. 1156 is just one contact/filament, for only bright. The backup and signal lights are 1156, and the brake lights are 1157.
I've been also interested in the Sylvania Silverstar 1156 and 1157 bulbs...but I've seen them for around $15 which is why I haven't installed them.....Yet.
I imagine they're a lot brighter, but since they're whiter and brighter, they probably don't last as long as the sylvania long life 1156 and 1157 bulbs.

^ yes, i know the difference. Sylvania still makes them both. It wouldn't be wise to spend the extra money for the reverse lights (1156)....or the turn signal bulbs (1156) for that matter. But I wouldn't mind having the Silverstars for the brake lights (1157)
Yes, I have tried those LED bulbs, and I never found any that worked. Instead, put those in, and you will get rear-ended by the idiot with 10000K HIDs.
I took my tail lights apart and built real LED circuits in there.... you could do the same, and I made mine brighter than stock by a lot.
does the 7th gen corolla interact well with the LED light bulbs?? I noticed on some sites that sell those LED or Luxeon light bulbs are low 5w and say that they may burn out because the car senses that it's low wattage and either rapidly flash the lights or just burn out...you'd have to install an LED load Resistor to counter the effects

I guess you mean putting LED bulbs in the turn signals... the only thing that will happen is the hyperflash, and you can easily fix this with a new electronic flasher unit that works with LEDs.

omg i love these forums!! gold94corolla you sir are a lifesaver!! I was soo frustrated that I came to these forums looking for hope.. After i read this thread, i ran back to the car and voila!! Ok, so I was having tail light problems.. my brakes light wouldnt work, they would stay on all the time... my dash light would light up everytime i press the brake.. i was goin crazy.. i thought i had a wiring problem.. i spent hours trying to figure things out (fuzes / wiring / light bulb sockets) and guess what the problem was??! Yes!!! i was using LIGHT BULBS 1156 INSTEAD OF 1157!!! what a dummy!! they are COMPLETELY different, not only the 1157 have 2 filaments, since the 1156 has 1 filament it causes the whole electrical system to short... Put new 1157 bulb and problem FIXED! dash lights back to normal, brake lights, everything like new!!.. hope this helps someone out there.. PLZ ppl check that ur BRAKE Light have 2 Filaments!! 1157 bulb. sorry for the long post. Bye
