Erratic Idle After Engine Rebuild

I have a 1995 1.6 liter corolla. I just got it put back together after a rebuild and it is having a very bad time idling. It seems to be misfiring on more than one cylinder. When revved up it runs much smoother (relatively) but when the throttle is let back off, it dies. There are no apparent vacuum leaks, everthing is hooked back up correctly and has a very strong spark to all cylinders.

I made sure that the timing was done exactly as the Haynes book said to, everything lined up. When adjusting the distributor there is not any change in the idle. I can unplug the spark plug wires or the injectors one at a time and there is little to no change in idle. The spark plugs are also black covered in soot or burned whatevers. I put a different spark plug in one cylinder and within 20 seconds of running, it is complely black like the others.

I am completely out of ideas right now. If the timing were off wouldn't adjusting the distributor cause minor differences? And yes, the spark plug wires are in the right place, distributor can only be installed one way too. Any ideas would be great

Soft, black, sooty, dry-looking deposits indicate a rich air fuel mixture, weak ignition or wrong heat range spark plug (too cold).

are you sure that your fuel injector harnesses are hooked up in the right order i had the same issue when i recently got mine overhauled and we found out that number 1 injector harness was suppose to go on number 2 injector and number 2 injector harness was suppose to be on number 1 injector so check that one out if you havent done that already and another issues is probaly a leak around the exhaust manifold area ther are 2 or 1 rings that are placed between the manifold and down pipe those are probaly worn around the edges.

Alright, I got it figured out. It helps to make 100% sure all vacuum lines are connected by physically pulling on them a bit. The little line that goes to the vacuum sensor on the firewall was unplugged so the computer gave it all the fuel that it could. Big headache rechecking the timing to find that it was a little hose! Thanks for the responses
