timing way off

I'm working on my corolla that has a badly work keyway and had to take the timing belt off and I unfortunately did not set it to tdc (or bdc) before doing so and i'm certain that the crank and cam are not even close to alignment (probably 180 out)

is there a way to "accurately" re-set the cam to the timing gear (crank)?

One thing I double check and don't mess around with is the timing, can't go around it, you just need to redo it take the belt off, zero in on that top dead center crank and cams. do you have a timing gun? Imagine my hybrid 4age has a 82mm Pistons with a cam lift of a 10.3mm, if my timing is off by 2 degree I can kiss my engine good bye.

Yea bro, unfortunately, it's a redo at that point. Thankfully these are non-interference motors so no harm no foul

I was under the impression that I do have an interference motor. I'm an s10 guy, this toyota is a new bag of chips all together :> yeah, I've got a timing gun, are there markings on the engine casting? how do I ensure I'm on the correct stroke with both the crank and the cam. I'm probably making this out to be way harder than it actually is and I'm def not gonna be workin on the car until weather breaks.

check the position of the distributor rotor to see if your at #1 then put your #1 piston at TDC, spin the intake to match and you're all set.

I know it just sounds easy!

haha didn't know these things had distributors, just inevitably thought it had a coil pack. alright so yeah, tdc at #1 piston, no problem, will both valves on #1 cylinder be fully closed?

Only if you make them that way. Just as a quick visual.. Typically with the piston on TDC you will see the cam lobes of both came pointing away from each other. You can find the marks and line them up exactly from there.
