Question Muffler for '95 Corolla

Well I have been putting it off for a while now but I think it might be time to get a new muffler soon.

First question, I have heard conflicting reports on whether a non-leaky muffler actually helps performance or hurts. Can someone clear that up for me? Will I notice a difference in car responsiveness with a new muffler?

Second, any recommendations on a cheapish but good muffler? I like the sound of the magnaflows but don't think I have the funds for that. I am looking at around 100ish.

even the most basic exhaust setups can cost more than that if you take it somewhere.

Why should there be any conflict? A wasted muffler hurts performance..... AND annoys your neighbors and law enforcement!

If its a stock engine, just replace it with a stock muffler.

I got a Walker 22783 which appeared to be as good/better than stock on closeout for $60 shipped from RockAuto.com - they are back up to $97 now but they have some other brands as cheap as $46. All it takes is a jack, jack stands, and basic hand tools to put it on - it's like 2 bolts and a 3 hangers (that are cheap and couldn't hurt to replace if they're worn). Main problem w/ leaky muffler is annoying sounds.

I bought a Dynomax muffler for my Corolla just under a month ago (2.25" inlet). Not too keen on loud exhausts (have got past that stage) so this was the perfect alternative. Planning on getting it put on when I do my exhaust in the next few weeks. Was hoping to have it done by now but ended up twisting my leg and stuffing up my plans.

Cheers man. Yeah I hope so . The catalytic converter has been removed so I won't have to worry about that causing a restriction, should be plain sailing from here on in, lol.

Kiwi,

Is that dynomax muffler a direct bolt on? Or does it need to be welded?

Needs to be welded mate. It has a 2.25" inlet, so would require a metal reducer in order to be welded to the stock piping. As for the outlet, you could either use a screw on extension, or get a 'proper' extension welded on the end. Haven't decided if I'm going to do that yet, might just keep it hidden discreetly under the car.

Lol yeah. I was looking at the stock exhaust extension the other day and it's quite long. I might just stick with the stealthy look when I get this new one put on, depending on how it looks. If it looks ridiculous then I'll probably just get one of those small exhaust tips that get hold on by grub screws so I don't have to fork out anymore money to get a tip welded on. Purely cosmetic .
