'94 Wagon; Rear Speaker Location

I just purchased this '94 Wagon. It appears that I have a 2 speaker version.

According to Crutchfield there are two rear stock speaker locations. Where are they? I have to have rear speakers, but I don't want to rip the car completely apart trying to find the speaker pocket.

Will there be rear speaker wires run despite this being a 2 speaker version?

according to crutchfield, it looks like they're located in or near the rear wheel wells. I'm not sure if those rear speakers are top mounted, but they sound like they should be considering you shouldn't have to access them from outside the vehicle. There's probably some screws around the grilles that allow you to pull out the speakers from the top.

They are located behind the back seats where the rear strut bolts are. If you have a cargo cover and this other piece behind the backseat, remove those first. You then remove the speaker cover with a flat head screw driver which should pop out easily and there they are! You're not really taking anything apart except the speaker cover.

Thanks for the replies.

To answer my own question - should anyone find this via search...

There were no rear speaker grills as I had a two speaker version. There is a pocket on the back side of the rear wheel wells. Remove the cargo cover, pop off the top part of the wheel well moulding. Drill and install speakers.

The speaker cables are run for the rear speakers; despite it being a two speaker version.

wow, this is really helpful. i have a '97 wagon here in norway, and its only a 2 speaker setup too. i noticed behind the rear seats on each side are pockets of somewhat. i knew that in other models speakers would be located there.
so youre saying i just pop off those pockets, and then inside there should be speaker wire ready to hook up?
that would be sweet. is there a speaker grill under there as well, or i'll have to make sure the speakers i buy come with grills to cover over them?
good thread.

would like to see how yours looks to give me an idea of what to do. thanks.

found this pic on an earlier thread, but this is what my "pocket" area looks like where the sliding shade is attached to behind the rear seat. check out pic #3. how am i to put some speakers there? seems when i have my shade extended out, if i had speakers there would then be hidden under the shade and would block most of the sound from coming up.

I don't think he gets on here much so I'll answer the question. Both wheels are 16's and sorry to disappoint you, but the drop is just photoshop but he'll likely slam it in the future.

What does your trunk look like? I didn't know some wagons didn't have speakers in the back. This is what mine looks like after the cargo cover and that other board thing is removed. You can see the speaker covers on the side and they pop out easily

hey thanks modern for the pic. you can check out what a pic of what my rear looks like in the message right about the reply you gave me. click on the pic and it'll become larger. if you see where the #3 , thats where i have somewhat of a pocket thing instead of an actual speaker grill.

looks like on your car, your speaker grill sticks up somewhat and is then angled in towards the back seat, i suppose to send the sound towards the front of the car.
in my car, its just a flat pocket panel thing, and then the sliding shade is attached to it as well. i wonder if youre whole part there is a whole different assembly? do you have pockets behind the speakers?
look at the pic of mine and see how it compares to yours.

lemme know what you come up with...

It's been a while so I can't remember what it looks like under the speaker cover but If I remember correctly, the speakers lay flat and only the cover is angled like that. There are no pockets behind the speakers. That little space is for the cargo cover to lay on it with another piece that goes between the cargo cover and the rear seats. Here's an old picture that I found that shows it.

I'll be upgrading my stock speakers once I have the money for it so I'll take pics for you when I do.

awesome. i'll look forward to the pics. seems mine is built different than yours. my cargo cover is directly behind the rear seat, and the pocket is behind the cargo cover. your cargo cover is behind the speakers i think.
so prob no way for me to find parts like yours and retrofit them to mine. i'd have to drill speakers into my pocket area, and when i close the sliding shade then the speakers will be under the shade, prob blocking most of the sound from coming to the front.
i suppose they just built these euro models different than the US in some things. stinks for me.

but def post some pics when you throw in some new speakers so i can see how your setup is. thanks!

speakers here in norway do exist!!! yesssssssssssssss. was thumbing through our local ad site for cars and came across this wagon with factory speakers in the rear. this wagon was more of a special edition, came with factory driving lights in the upper grill beside the toyota logo emblem, had a spoiler over the rear window, 1.6L engine where as normally here its 1.3L, and the obvious speakers installed in the back where mine has the pockets. take a look:

[IMG] [/IMG]

i suppose i'll head out to the wreckers sometime and see if any have the speaker grilles that i could snatch off of one. this gives me hope so far. this would make my installation very clean and oem looking for sure. wish me luck!
