I suppose its information but its confusing. Why do they show TWO sets of timing marks? Once at the beginning and another down the page, Why do they tell you to take off the cam pulleys? There is no reason to except to replace the seals..... WHICH THEY DONT MENTION but the crank seal gets hard as a rock after so many years of soaking in hot oil.

I forget but doesnt the valve cover "lock" a part of the belt cover when you put it on? Or am I mixing up car parts again! I would put the valve cover on last.

Just some thoughts on my end.

Methinx it's at 100,000km mark...which yeah, is about the 60,000mi mark

Interestingly enough, it's slightly different for the 20Valve guys, cuz I keep seeing stuff here about cam timing being off and car won't start etc. Unlike the ST 20V, the BT 20V is NOT a non-inteference engine so timing needs to be spot on before you try to turn it over.

There are two cam timing marks to be followed. One on each cam that lines up with the marks on the valve cover, and another set on each cam that are supposed to line up with each other once the top marks like up with the cover (fig.1) while down below, the mark on the timing belt gear lines up with the mark on the oil unit body (fig.2).

In the Autozone Manual why are there two different instruction sets, one with one cam gear and one further down that shows 2 cam gears? Which one is mine if I have a 1997 1.6L base model? Any one else confused by this?

All Toyota engines with a "FE" engine designation have one cam gear only, with the other camshaft driven via internal scissor gears. The "GE" engines have 2 cam gears. I usually think of the FE engines as "fake" DOHC :P

Jeez, it's a lot of friggin' work just to get to the timing belt, let alone change it.

That guide covers 4A-GE engines (2 cam gears) as well as 4A-FE and 7A-FE engines (single cam gear). The latter was in 93-97 US Corollas. Other markets, as well as older US Corollas, had various versions of the 4A-GE engine.
