I just bought a used 1995 DX automatic with 139k miles. this is going to be my primary work transportation vehicle since i drive 76 miles everyday. what would you do if you just bought this car? (maintenance, preventative maintenance, mods, upgrades, etc...) this car has no cruise control and is missing the key fob, which are some things i would like to address. any ways I am excited to be here and look forward to what the corolla community has to offer. from what i have read tune ups are pretty important, OEM wires, cap and rotor. I would like to keep this car as efficient as possible since I will be putting a lot of miles on it. I will be also looking to purchase a factory service manual as soon as possible, if someone could point me in the right direction to find one. Thanks in advance.
If reliability is a priority, then I wouldn't suggest modifying anything save for adding the aftermarket cruise control. Just keep up with maintenance, regular oil changes and the recommend factory intervals, change any fluids (transmission, power steering, coolant, etc.) if you haven't done so.
Other than that, I can't really think of much else.
How many miles do you have the car?

Just get a Haynes manual, what I would do (or am doing) is a full service:
1) Oil change
2) Oil/Fuel filter change
3) Spark plugs
4) Coolant flush
5) Good brake bleed (enough to flush a good portion of the old fluid out)
6) Some engine cleaner - like injection spray stuff (you spray in the intake with the engine running)
7) Some fuel mix engine cleaner - like Redex (just a high dose for a few fuel tanks)
Most things would be pointed out on a Haynes manual - I got mine off ebay, should be easy to source.
And enjoy the car.

timing belt! change trans fluid! inspect the brakes and front suspension/steering parts, change the brake fluid (when you do brakes next time). replace the cap and rotor if its not been done yet as well.
Speaking of maintenance on a fresh rolla, what do you guys think about coolant? Are you OK with using other coolants than Toyota Red? My car already has the green stuff in it and I have a gallon of Peak high mileage 100% coolant ready to go. It needs a thermostat because it stays so cold it didn't shift into OD on the highway last night, so I was thinking of throwing the peak stuff in there, as it already doesn't use Red stuff to begin with.
I ordered a toyota service manual for $68 shipped on ebay.
I seem to be having some vibration at idle, and from what i have read is from the right motor mount being bad. so i am looking to replace that pretty soon. thanks for the warm welcome!
Boy Yota:Please dont thread jack, if you have a question about coolant just search for it, if you do not come up with the answers you want, then start your own thread.

I asked a question relevant to your post so that we could both get useful information without the need for additional threads. You're welcome.

the title to my thread was "New to the corolla world, first things first", not what color coolant should i use. in the future use the search function and select advanced, then search the title only, this will yield many results without the need to thread jack. this way we can both get the information we need without the need for additional posts that have little to do with the original thread. But seriously, the easiest way to search for something is through the title search not through every word in the post, so please if you can not find the info you are looking for , please start a new thread. Your Welcome!

This is a real laid back community here... there is no need for this kind of thread crapping non sense. He asked about information that could be relevant to your questions.
So please, Chill out.

if you have green coolant in there then just keep using that, unless you 100% drain and flush your cooling system then putting red in is a waste since it will just mix with the green and that could cause more problems than it fixes.
Back on topic... unless you're travelling on the highway for more than 30mins at a time, I really don't think adding cruise control will help, concentrate on keeping your engine tuned (spark plugs, wires, filters, etc.)
I have cruise on all my cars and never use it... even when I travelled 150km a day to work (75km each way) I never used it, and still never use it when say travelling to Niagara to visit friends (2hr drive each way).
I would also look into cleaning the engine bay as well. Some people use degreasers like simple green. There are other kinds of chemicals and methods. Some people don't even cover up the electrical components such as the distributor and the alternator when using degreaser and then a hose to flush it.
A cleaner engine does make a difference though!
