1.6l upshift problems

Our 97 1.6l with 152K miles developed a shift problem today. I sucessfully rocked it to get it unstuck from the snow but now it won't upshift under I completely drop the throttle.

This is my first post here, a testimonial to the reliability of the car. My only repair to date has been an EGR valve quickly diagnosed with a OBDII reader.

Thanks in advance for your help.

And this is why we moved out of Maryland.

Did you jack it up and look underneath for any possible damage to the transmission?

No, it just happened an hour ago. I'll jack it up tomorrow.

Who knows, with some luck it could be a weird temporary issue and be gone by tomorrow.

Something I forgot to ask is does it not shift past 1st? Then you drop the throttle and it shifts, and you have to do this for every time you want it to go to the next gear?

That sounds like muffed clutch discs....

Check the fluid for color. It should be red. You may need to drop the pan to check for metallic shavings.

Explain this shift problem more...is it slipping or just won't shift??? You prolly wiped out the friction material in #1 clutch pack is my first assumption

It exhibits no slippage just won't upshift unless I completely drop the throttle. Downshifting on the brakes wasn't a problem. I didn't try it but am pretty sure it won't downshift under hard throttle.
