You replace the head gasket. Having a shop do it will probably cost in excess of $1000 given that it is located between the two main halves of the engine.

Gasket set - 180-200 bucks
Head bolts - 60
Labour - about 8 to 10 hours at shop rate.

You do the work, its ok. If your paying someone else, its a huge job.

I hope you have someone reliable making the head gasket diagnosis.

The headgaskets on these models are super thick and can take a shit load of a beating.

Make sure you know FOR SURE the head gasket is blown.

You guys put too much faith in these head gaskets. My 4AFE Celica overheated and poof there went the head gasket. Running hot and not noticing will blow the head gasket on any motor.

True. Youi might as well sell the car for parts then, since the cost would probably be more than the car is worth

Go buy a torque wrench, gasket, and bolts. Do it yourself. At most get the cylinder head checked by engineering shop to see if it has warped and to get it skimmed or get a replacement 2nd hand one (that isn't warped).

But Haynes manual or ask someone to scan the pages that tells you the tightening order and torquing procedure.

My advice would be, if you have to ask how to do it then you should do not do this job particular job on your own. First, as it's been stated, head gaskets don't just "blow", it's pretty much caused by overheating of some kind that warped your head. But be 100% sure it's your head gasket that's the problem, I would suggest you have a mechanic diagnose it. You can't just "buy parts and slap'er a new gasket in" like people like to suggest, it is extremely involved work and you will basically have 2/3 of your engine apart.

But it's not worth it on this car to have a mechanic do the replacement, head grinding, whatever else may be necessary, you should have somebody with decent mechanic experience help you do this at home. The car manual will give you about about half of the knowlege that you will need to know for this job as it can't tell you every single step. But remember to be very sure that the head gasket is the problem.

These cars are extremely cheap to work on if you do it yourself, I got a complete head gasket set on ebay for $40 shipped plus you get valve seals and all that good stuff but you'd have to be crazy to spend $200 on a head gasket for this engine....
