Cool 1995 Corolla 7A-FE Seca 102R

I've just purchsed a 2nd hand 1995 Corolla CS-X Seca 7A-FE and mine is having some acceleration issues.

The Tachometer seems to take forever to drop revs from 3000rpm back down to 2000rpm when trying to reach 60km/hr

She's quite sluggish reaching speeds

My engine Light has come on, and the read out was the Knock Sensor so I'm currently trying to hunt down one of them.

My brother doesn't think the issue is the knock sensor, he believes it's the MAP & Oxygen Sensors, plus he reckons there is a hole in the exhaust (i'd just had it serviced & they didn't see anything though)
It kinda does sound like a hole in the exhaust though.

Currently, we've been out & about searching for 2nd hand sensors but every engine we've looked at, none actually have a knock sensor...all of Australia doesn't seem to have any either & my mechanic said he'd have to import from Japan.

I don't want to spend over $300 on a new one if that doesn't actually fix the issue though.

Furthermore, I seem to be going through a lot of Petrol too, it helped abit when i took the o-ring off the petrol cap though, but still gulps abit.
(was better when added premium '95, may also try Ultimate '98 to see how that goes)

The symptoms you list will cause you to burn more fuel, but the only insight I can give is agreeing you've got a bad sensor somewhere. A knock sensor shouldn't cause the car to run poorly, though.

I have similar problems on a 4A-FE corolla, trying to find a knock sensor.

A faulty knock sensor can causes incomplete combustion, and a sluggish drive.

I had it go on other cars, but struggling to find a replacement sensor this time (and am hoping it is the sensor).

Does the check engine come on around 2000-3000rpm on some throttle (If you accelerate downhill it does not come up as easily)?

Oh yeah and without a knock sensor - economy is out of the window.

The ECU changes the ignition timing based on feedback from the knock sensor so if it cant read from it it will make an automatic retard on the timing.

Check the spark plugs, wires, distributer cap and rotor.

knock sensor worked

My Dad managed to find a cheap knock sensor for AU$35 and chucked it into my car and we were amazed at how much difference such a little thing could do.

Car is running like it should now. Timing Belt was changed in Dec 09.

Still unsure about petrol consumption??? I'm still getting used to the difference from a mitsubishi V6 i had before this...

I have noticed the difference in price :-) but i still think that the corolla might be loosing more petrol than it should be???
