96 Corolla won!t downshift

Bought a 96 Corolla, with a bad engine, just put another engine in and it won!t downshift when slowing down, and I have to manully shift it into low to get it to downshift, and I have to start out in low everytime, if I start in Drive, it is wanting to start in a higher gear, so I have to manually pull the lever into L, and then it shiftd fine, as I shift through second and then Drive, and then it won!t downshift, have to put into neautraland then start out in L again aftre stopping
Help!!!!!!!Need to drive it from Naples Florida to Milwaukee, on Friday HELP!!!

what tpye of engine do you have?
what type of engine did you replace it with?

Sounds like a solenoid is failing.
