clanking noise when coasting

Wondering if any has to deal with this. I have a metal clanking noise coming from the front drivers side. Happens when i take my foot off the brake or gas pedals and the car is just coasting. Stops when either pedal is pressed. It is a 93 dx corolla w/ 258000. Still runs well, but the noise concerns me. It has not increased in volume or decreased in the last 6000 miles. I am sure soomething is just worn out, but would like a heads up. Thanks in advance.

More then likely a CV joint, maybe a loose strut or caliper bracket...

take off the wheel and give everything a good tugging.

It could also be your wheel bearings, but that is usually associated with a grinding sound. Still, sometimes they clank a little. Take off your wheel and try to move the hub vertically and laterally. If it has any play (movement) it means the bearings need to be replaced.

warped rotors scraping against the brake pads maybe?

I have the same kind of sound in my 97 DX. In mine, anyhow, it's not the CV or the strut or the brakes. I just had all that stuff out last weekend looking for the noise, put in a new axle while I was in there. A couple years ago, I did have a loose strut nut that sounded about the same.

I don't know - maybe a motor mount? What else is left? Guess I'll keep looking and hope something bad doesn't happen.

Motor mounts are a possibility, but usually you will only get a knocking sound right when you press the accelerator and right when you let off of it.

Hah! Found mine! The rear bolt that holds the lower control arm on was loose. The bushing there is hosed, too, but tightening the bolt stopped the noise.
