I'm looking at some new front tires for my Corolla. 175/65/R14s on this one. I need something all weather and with an "A" traction rating, and it must be fairly affordable. I'm considering the Hankook Optimo H240 or Yokohama AVID Touring-S. Also considering the General Altimax RT. Any other options in that price range ($75 and under for the tire)? The Pirelli P6 Fourseason is also an option but it's probably going to cost too much.
Check out the Bridgestone Potenza RE960AS Pole Positions, they are currently on special for $59 each at the Tire Rack. They are rated AA in traction. They only come in 185/60/14 though, but it shouldn't throw the speedometer off by too much.

Unfortunately I can't change size as I would need to buy new rears as well, and the rear tires are no where near needing replacement. What about the Potena RE92 (81T speed rated, not the higher end 84S). Probably out of my range though, and the low 160 tread ware rating concerns me for a car that will probably get around 10-12k a year put on it. My rears atm are National Catalyst4s. I would consider those on the fronts if I knew who made them.

Ah thanks for finding that. I'll probably have my local shop do a set of those.

Mixing and matching tires will yield unpredictable handling characteristics and is not recommended at all.
How much would this impact this car (FWD) though? I'm wondering because the fronts are currently different than the rears (fronts are some crappy Daytons) and it handles fine in emergency situations. I thought that was more for AWD/4WD vehicles and cars with ABS systems.
I don't plan on going autocross with this specific car anymore, as I have other plans for a car for that. I can however see though how it may not handle as well as it could with a high performance front tire and lower performance rear tire.
I just got a set of Falken Sincera 185/65 R145's. I highly recommend them for their price and capability They will fit your wheels. They are all-terrain tires, are rated for 60,000 miles, and are speed rated T (Sedan/Wagon/Van - 118mph, which is more than plenty for a Corolla.) The best part is the price; they're only $62.00/ea at Discount Tire.
I don't think they're worn in yet, but they have excellent grip so far. They make my wagon really hug the corners. They also do extremely well on rainy days.
I have it narrowed down to the Falken, General Altimax RT, Hankook, and National Catalyst. I'll probably go to my installer and see what his prices are on them before picking one. Is there much different between the RT and HP altimax? I would need to go with the RT to keep with the size I already have on the car. The Falkens do come in the size currently on the car. Just have to see what the installed cost is.
I really love Michelin. Great tire and great customer service. I got a set of the Harmony tires. They have been wearing very well on my 96 DX and do pretty well even in snow. I got them from Discount Tire - with free lifetime rotations and balance. Discount Tire is very aggressive with price matching. You can also check Tire Rack for deals.
I wouldnt recommend the falken maybe except the falken sincera because they wear very quickly. The guy i got the tire changed at told me that he dosnt reccomend them. Altimax hp is only few dollars more and have great handeling. I would higly suggest u go to tire rack and check out the tires on there.

yes, the RT is much less agressive than the HP. personally for a corolla i wouldn't suggest either. the RT is...so so when compared to other tires in its price range and the HP i think wears too quickly for a car like the corolla.
I would stick with the brand that you have until you can afford 4 new of the same on what you like. Different tires, different traction, hydroplaning resistance etc. can make the car handle VERY weird in rain and emergency situations....been there done that especially in snow.
Tirerack is great to read all the reviews of the brands they carry. Overall price works out about the same as buying local but you might save tax $$.
I really like the Michelin's for balancing, smooth ride. My Mom has the Michelin Primacy MXV4 on her Camry and they are real good and smooth, My friend has the Pilot Exalto A/S on his car handle a little better, ride a little stiffer wearing well so far. Others have both General's and no complaints/issues from them either. I have the Altimax Arctic on my Sequoia and they are AWESOME in the snow/ice/cold.
