gen 7 97 Corolla gas door problem

Was having gas filled awhile ago but when I pulled the release to open the gas door, it didn't open. Ended up calling AAA and they reached in from inside the trunk (I had tried this but nothing happened) and released it. It was a WICKED COLD NIGHT, thought something just froze up, that would have been too easy.

I drove around awhile with the door open, then some *&^%$ deliberately closed the door after I told him not to, so now I need to know how to get it open.

There is a wire cable in there that seems to be loose, has a little ball thing on the end, like maybe it just dropped out of somewhere. You can tug on it, it does not seem to be broken. (But that doesn't do anything.) But I can't see in there well enough and move my hands around good enough to figure this out. Either to put the cable back where it belongs or see where the other guy unlatched it from inside, ... I need to get gas!

I did spray the whole potato with lots of WD40 hoping (vainly, I knew, because of the cable hanging there) that might magically make it work, but no deal.

I have a major issue with AAA right now and am not going to call them to ask how they did it.

What I need is a PICTURE of what it looks like from inside. I asked the guy that night, how he released it, he said he just pushed on a latch in there. I can't tell what I am feeling in there. Can anyone help me? Even just explain to me where the latch is and what it feels like? Can only get one hand in there and can't even get enough of my head in there to get a real good look at even one side of stuff. I'm talking about after I pulled the carpet away, etc. Ain't much room in there.

Hey, I moved your thread from the intro section to the Corolla section. These guys are pretty darn cool and know the Corolla inside and out. If anybody can help, it's these guys.
Good Luck and welcome to the forum.

Welcome to the forum. Since yours is a 97, you should have a little lever inside the trunk that you press to open the fuel flap. As far as I know, only the later models had this. With the carpet pulled back, feel around in the location where the fuel flap/filler neck is and you should feel a spring loaded catch that you can push on. If you can't find the lever then you could always try locating the original wire that leads to it and give it a quick pull. Best of luck. Let us know how you get on .

Photobucket is giving me issues right now. I got a picture and video for you but can't upload it. If you can feel in there, on the top (of the assembly) toward the rear of car where the ball is it sits inside a small lever. Push up and forward on that lever and it should retract the pin that is holding the flap closed. PM your email and I'll try to send it to you.

I was at the wreckers today and decided to have a quick look. The mechanism inside the trunk was very similar to the one in the photo posted above. I just gave the cable a quick pull and sure enough the fuel flap popped open.
