Transmission or axle?

My sister's car won't move. Its a 1995 Corolla 1.8L. It did this at a stop light and was pushed into a parking lot. The engine is fine but when put it into reverse or drive it makes a grinding noise from the engine/tranny. When I popped the hood I could see the right axle (long shaft) spinning if the car is put in reverse or drive but the car won't move. The left axle does not spin.

Before this the right axle was clicking but just hasn't been replaced. The left axle was just replaced a couple of months ago. Could it be the tranny or just the axle? I'm hoping it's just the axle which is cheaper to fix.

TIA,
Lee

If the axle shaft is spinning and the wheel is not there must be a problem with the axle or the splines in the hub.

crabbypaul - Thanks, I will look into those.

I had it towed home and the tow truck driver asked if my brakes worked or not because the car moved when he was retracting the tow arm that tows the car. Also when I pushed it into my driveway which has a slight incline the car rolled back like its in neutral and I had to put on the emergency brakes and a log under the rear tires so the car wouldn't roll into the street even though its in park. What does this mean?

TIA,

Lee

It sounds like one of the CV Joints on the axles either snapped, or the differential inside the trans is bad... either way..... be prepared for extensive repairs.

cmon

cmon folks. a broken axle is not the end of the world. That is not an expensive repair and i think if the poster has a place to work on it he should give it a go. We can talk you through it. They are not that hard to fix. if its the diff or tranny that could s@ck but have a look at the cv first.

wheredoesthisgo - Thanks for the words of encouragement.

I've done the axles before on a different corolla so I'm not worried if it's the axle, I'm just worried it might be the differential or tranny. But I will find that out when I take out the axle tomorrow. I just haven't experienced this before. Thanks guys for your inputs!

It ended up being a bad axle. It was the joint closest to the tranny that was broken and when the car was put in drive or reverse it would just grind at that point. Power never reached the wheel.

if the long shaft spins, then that CV joint has popped out of the drive...new CV joint time
