Coolant system recommendations
Hi all,
I have a '97 Corolla with 133,000 miles. Next month I plan on hijacking someone's driveway to overhaul my cooling system (apartment dwelling sucks!). I'll definitely be doing the following:
- Coolant flush
- Replace all hoses
- Replace overflow system (some brilliant mechanic decided to bypass the overflow system by melting the T-cap shut)
- Replace thermostat (I think it's stuck open)
I need to replace the bypass hose connecting the water neck to the pump, but I'd like to avoid removing the water pump itself if possible. The water pump is relatively new and removing/remounting it looks like a PITA. The Haynes manual doesn't cover this at all -- can I remove the hose by itself, or will I need to remove the water pump first?
Anything else I should do while I'm in there? The radiator (Harrison) seems to be holding up, but may be slightly rusty inside. It looks like there might be a tiny bit of seepage around the edges of the plastic tank, but the coolant level hasn't gone down noticeably over the past year. Is this something I should replace as a preventive measure?
