1995 Corolla, taking out engine. Have a question

I am taking out the engine in my 1995 Corolla because I am swapping it with one from a 94 Corolla. My question is, in order to take out the engine, do I have to take out the transmission as well. Thanks.

It is advisable. Otherwise, when removing the engine, you'll need something to hold the tranny so it does not fall and get damaged.

The transmission although little heavy, is a small unit. Yes ideally take them out together since you need to pull both axleshafts anyways, and once the engine is out, it will be easy to check clutch wear if one or both of the transmissions is a manual.

Its fairly easy to support the transmission without the engine in. You do need enough clearance to separate the two. An automatic only needs a little bit to have the flexplate clear the bellhousing but a manual needs to have the pressure plate come out.

I havent pulled one out of the Toyota so I cant say how much room there is. You'll have to decide.

I have swapped engines without removing the trans with an automatic, but with a manual trans, you need to pull both at the same time and separate the two outside the car. Since there are three mounts that attach the trans to the car once the engine is out, supporting the trans without the engine is not a problem.

I would like to point out that although that may be easier, you actually DONT have to take both out at the same time.I changed my engine in just over an hour without really touching the 'box (bar the bolts and starter of course lol)
