The turbo you pick has more to do with how much power you want to make and where you want to make it, along with the displacement of the engine your working on.
As for turbos themselves, pretty much the only ones I've ever seen used are either Garrett T25/T28 series or something OEM that is derived from that. It's probably the most common on the market which is why it's normally used. Likewise, those are the only models you're really going to find manifolds for these cars that fit those turbos as well.
