Corolla CV Joints Only

I'm going to be getting some extra money here soon so I'm going to use it to fix up the Corolla.

The two major things to be fixed are the windshield and CV joints.

The windshield is pretty simple, I will have to look into getting it covered by insurance or getting it replaced by someone else.

I am fully capable of changing CV joints but I don't really want to spend money on a whole axle when chances are the inner joints are just fine. I've looked somewhat online but can't seem to find just the joints online. Is there any place I can get just the joints? That would save me money for something else to get fixed. I found the joints on Ebay for the previous generation Corolla for 50.00, otherwise two new axles are going to run me around 150.00.

Thanks.

The outer CV joints are not meant to be disassembled. They are sold pre-assembled into a unit with the axle. However, the inner joints are easily taken off. Just remove the boot, then a snap-ring that holds the tripod with bearings. Slide the tripod off the shaft or use a brass punch and a hammer to drive the tripod off the shaft.

Yep, the outer ones ar the ones that let go. They have to deal with a much wider range of motion than the inners.

While you may be able to find outer joints, its not economical to do a replacement on them. Its sooo much easier to buy a new axle WITH a warranty and not get you, your car, and your work area covered in grease, just to save $20.

Just replace the whole axle. I just replaced the left axle on mine last month and it was the inner joint. Also remember to change the axle seal too.
