Help make my Prizm fast?

The fastest I got my car was 102?

IMO, thats slow. So do you guys have any idea on how to make it faster?

Its a 96 prizm lsi, auto, 2" muffler and a custom cold air intake.

I'm not looking to swap or spend a huge amount of cash, but if you do know engines that would fit, please tell me =]

Imma car nubby

The fact that it's an auto hinders the performance straight off the bat, but there are still a few things you can do to squeeze some more power from the stock engine.

What exactly have you done to make the "custom cold air intake"? If you've just added a pod filter in place of the standard airbox then that doesn't count as it actually makes performance worse, but if you've routed the pod filter outside of the engine bay (such as behind the front bumper or in front of the wheel) then that will certainly help in terms of performance.

Apart from a decent air intake, you'll need 4-2-1 headers (which you can buy on eBay), and a 2.25-2.5" cat-back exhaust. To get serious power, you really need to add a turbo. But once you add a turbo, your fuel bill goes up and your reliability goes down, so you have to decide whether or not you actually need that much power.

I notice you said that you don't want to spend a huge amount of cash, but if you want a better platform to start with however, then I'd highly suggest swapping the motor with a 4A-GE 20v, and possibly do an auto to manual transmission swap at the same time. If you want even more power than that, just get a 4A-GZE, rip the supercharger off and whack a turbo set-up on (essentially making it a 4A-GTE).

Alternatively, you can choose to turbo your current 7A-FE engine. A member of these forums, pnyk33, has posted photos of his build process. He used a 4A-FE engine, but the process is the same. It may also interest you to know that his is an auto as well. Have a look through this thread:

tow it with a fast truck

srsly, i have a 93 prizm lsi auto as a second car (trans is down at the moment) and while it was slow, there were slower things on the road. got the ebay header, messed with the airbox, advanced the timing (and ran 89 octane), 'custom' mufflerless exhaust' etc etc. it was still slow as ever but it had a better powerband and felt like it had a little more pep. plenty of power to pass someone on the highway, but a race car it was not. save your money (i've been here before, remember?) and put it towards something else thats faster to start with or takes to mods better, or has more aftermarket.

Only so fast you can go with an unmodified or not built for high speed running FWD economy car. You're lucky you did not lose control
