door lock question

The door lock for my driver seat door has stopped working, and I don't really want to buy a new one if I don't have to. Is it possible to just switch the right and left door locks around, or are they different somehow so that they wouldn't fit?

Thanks

Additional info:
97 corolla
4 doors
power locks
1.8L engine

If you are talking about the lock cylinder, they can usually be "fixed" with some lubrication. Look on the shelves for some "Lock ease."

The actual door lock cylinder is not interchangeable, being a right and left unit.It would only be backwards in an attempt to switch. Most parts stores sell these as a package deal,so your best bet is finding a junkyard. All of 93-97 locks will work so you have a good range of possible old Corollas being in the yard.If you want brand new, shop online the cheapest I saw in a set was 25$,for both lock cylinders and keys.Good luck

door solution

i've had similar problem, my drivers' door lock didn't work properly - the key didn't turn. well, once my husband accidentely opened that lock with his Honda key since then it always work.i mean i'm not sure if that door can be open with any key now, but it is what it is - the lock works

I took both my front door lock cylinders out and sprayed them out with wd-40. Then, since I had the door panels off anyway, I greased all the door lock linkages. The locks work real slick now.

yeah I've tried using lubricant, but it only helps for a little while. After a bit of use the lock goes back to being getting stuck all the time. I guess I can try and take it out and see what other parts of it I can apply wd-40 to (besides the keyhole).

Anyway thanks everyone.

I had a similar problem, I thought someone tried to gum up the lock cause it was difficult to unlock. I re cut the key at the local hardware store that uses Access keys and works fine now. Access keys are cheaper metal, but it doesn't take force to turn and unlock now. Worst comes to worst, dealer can cut the key by VIN for $8 to $10 or if you have a coupon for 15-20 percent off, even cheaper.
