Fair enough. The photo makes the filter appear much more vulnerable than it actually is. It sits close to the front part of the bumper, so the chances of stones getting up there are minimal. If you don't cut the whole part of the splash tray out like I did then the chances will be even less. Also, rain doesn't affect it. The only way you're going to hydro-lock the engine is if you fully submerge the pod filter in water. In my opinion, the positives far outweigh the negatives.
Other than a CAI, you could always replace the factory induction hose that leads to the pod filter with a larger, more flexible hose.
That's how I had my set-up before upgrading to a CAI. You still suck in hot engine bay heat due to the short ram, but the hose at least helps to feed some cold air in there:
Another option is to extend the pipe from the throttle body, which brings the pod filter closer to the front of the car. You will need to turn your battery around to do this however. Again, this will still suck in hot air, but the battery blocks the majority of it. This is a photo of what one member on these forums did:
