brake time

Hi all,
OK 97 needs brakes, How hard/easy is it to do for someone with limited mech ablilities? I'd like to do it myself and not spend stupid money on some store.

Brakes are a pretty easy task. Probably a 3 on the 1 to 10 mechanical scale. Got a manual? Usually a good step by step set of instructions there. Once you do one set, you'll see how most work. It gets easier.

If you DONT have decent mechanical abilities, then find someone to do it. Remember your brakes ARE important and you dont want to screw them up! Safety comes before saving money.

Its the BEST THING for you to learn how to do... remember... replace the pads before they start grinding, because then you'll need rotors...

Haven't done my rear brakes yet but did the pads and rotors on my front and it's fairly simple except I was eatin alive by black flies.Just do your homework watch some DIY vids for brakes in general, then go to the DIY on this forum for our actual brake replacement procedure or use a Haynes manual which you should get anyways if you don't have one.If your memorie's no good make a list of to do's, get everything you need ready before you start, and don't forget the little things like caliper grease for your pins, brake quiet on your pads, brake cleaner for dust and to remove the packing oil on new rotors.Grab som PB Blaster if your assemblies rusted you may have a few overtightened,or locked up bolts,I had a few tricky ones.Take your time, double check your work and enjoy the satisfaction of saving money and helping out your vehicle, also some recommend a break in procedure for new brakes, look into that when you go on your first run, some say it's uneeded so you'll have to make that judgement after some research.Good luck.

Fronts are pretty easy. The rears, given they're drums, are a real pain due to all the parts that I personally leave to someone else if you don't have someone who is used to working with drums to walk you through it.
