Roaring sound coming from engine!

My daughters car has the 1.6L with about 220K miles and when on the interstate and going over 70MPH the engine makes a loud roaring sound, and it aint like a lion either. If I put car in neutral and let off the gas it stops but as soon as rev the engine it comes back. I got it home and popped the hood and reved the engine and I think what I heard is a lot of top end noise. The car runs great otherwise, I know my daughter has ran the car pretty low on oil a few times, could this possibly be cam and/or rocker wear? There is no knocking sound or anything coming from the engine while idling. Any ideas?

Have you checked the exhaust system? Sounds like it could have a small leak.
