A/C won't charge plus other issues

This is my first Toyota, 94 Corolla. The A/C compressor kicks on, but only for a second, then back off. It won't take a charge. I assume there is a bypass somewhere but I don't know where. My guess is there isn't enough refrigerant in the system to keep the compressor running.

Also, the speedo needle just spins on the face. It says I am doing 110 while sitting still. Sometimes It just spins slowly around the face, sometimes it just sits in one spot. The odometer works fine, but the speedo is all over the place. What causes this? An electrical gremlin?

Bad ground on what? AC or speedo? Or both?

Speedometer not working could be from a loose connection on the gauge, a broken gauge (most likely), the PCB on the gauge being damaged, or a faulty vehicle speed sensor. Do you have a check engine light when you drive (Sometimes a faulty VSS will throw a code)?
