ok guys when i bought my 94 corolla base model my speedo didnt work on my gauge cluster so i figured i had a broken gauge cluster the only gauge that worked was my gas gauge so i bought an upgraded gauge clster with a tach and installed it today and now every gauge works except for the speedometer so i unistalled it and tried messing with the wires and trying to make a better contact between the plug and the cluster and installed it again and still it doesnt work please can somebody help me give me some tips thank you.

Usually when they dont work the ecu doesnt like it but I dont know all of Toyota's tricks.
Before you spend lots of dollars for one, check and see if it has a pulse when the wheels roll. I've done it on a slight grade and let the car roll a few feet, or you can put the front on jackstands and spin a wheel.
It doesn't have a pulse checked for that i talked to my friend and he said to check for a speedometer plug that gets attached to my transmission do you know if my corolla has a speedometer plug that goes to my transmission.
actually before you go pulling parts... drive it for a while and see if occasionally the speedometer will jump up to like 60mph or so, stay there a bit and go back to zero. i remember when i bought my prizm, i had the same issue but it wasn't until a month or so later that i saw the speedometer jump up. my issue was the speedometer head. but then again youve had the same problem with two consecutive speedometers.... it could be the speed sensor =) just like everyone was saying.
Kickfli12, my 94 Corolla stays at zero, unless I drive it at faster speeds and it jumps up to like 64 and just stays there. What does that mean, and what do I need to do to fix it? Thanks for the help.
There is an actual speedometer sensor for the speedo. Its electronic so you don't have a cable. It sits on the transmission.
Depending on whether you have a 3 speed(83181-12040) or 4 speed(83181-12020) transmission, I would check that out. It was a common part to go out in those years.
No I didn't take any pictures, but it's really easy. The directions given in that thread are spot on. However, I couldn't find any apparent "cracks" in the soldering but I did notice some odd soldering spots. Anyways, using my soldering iron, I heated up as many of the soldering spots as I felt comfortable with on the back of the speedometer gauge, took off the black piece on the back of the gauge cluster panel and cleaned up and bent out the connections on it, then put it all back together. And to my amazement it worked. Now I'm enjoying my new inspection sticker

For all those who are having this problem with the speedometer. The correct answer is the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) Corolla has it's own on board diagnostic. When this or any Transaxle problem is happening your overdrive light will flash repeatedly, (that's like a warning for check engine light something is wrong). Pick up a Hanes service manual for approx. $24 for the 94 corolla go to page 7-1 & it will instruct you how to locate the code for the problem, it will also instruct youi how to test the sensor once removed. The part is not $245 llike someone mentioned, go to a NAPA parts store it's $115 just bought one yestrerday.
Good luck to all with the problem
