my friend has a 1997 toyota corolla 1.6 ce
You start it in the morning it will run ok till it warms up then starts running like crap like its starving for gas.
wont go over 40 mph.
he replace dist, fuel pump,cat,o2 sensors fuel reg,Dist ignitor.
Ok gang whats next. HELP
are you sure it sounds like it starving for fuel or air? if you have change and cleaned everything concerning the fuel maybe should take a look at you air intake like cleaning the trottle body. ther may be a high build up of gunk in ther thats starving the air+fuel ratio mix, so maybe you can check that out. also gave us a complete run down of what you change and cleaned out
we have changed Distributor, igniter, fuel filter, fuel pump, map, and cleaned plate and injectors, and pulled exhuast off thinking maybe blockage same, new o2 sensors.
I runs like new for the first 15 mins.
no problems at all. step on it and it will put you in the back seat but give it 15 min and it gos from ready to go to nascar to your lucky to get across the street. woody
Could it be that once the engine warms up and the ECU goes to "closed loop" operation, the problems start? ECU operates in "open loop" until the engine is warmed up, meaning that it does not adjust the mixture based on sensor feedback, but uses the programmed values according to coolant temp, MAP/MAF and throttle position sensor. There is a bit more to it, but that is the general idea.
Have you checked the O2 sensor output on the VF1 terminal in the diagnosis connector? It should be fluctuating roughly once per second.
Doh!, the car being a 1997 it will be OBD2 which means you will have to backprobe the sensor itself.
Then again if there is a problem with signal delivery from the O2 sensors it would set error codes in the ECU. Check that first as suggested earlier.
I would also run diagnostics.as outlined above with the open-loop until its warm and then running like crap would indicate the ecu is giving wrong signals to the injectors, and I would guess it is one/more sensors giving a wrong signal...
is speedy25 is right bout the cat, the cat (or middle of exhaust more or less) should give a slight rattle when started, be careful to listen out for this...

C'mon! You cant judge a cat by the fact that it "rattles!" And if it does it probably means its breaking up and will soon be clogging!
I had one die on the interstate one night, but it was on a Honda that has springs on the exhaust joints. The springs let enough exhaust escape so I could drive home. I had no warning other than age that it was about to go.
