Oil pan removal....why is everything a PITA?

Man, you'd think something like this would be easy, but no!!!!!!!!!!!

1995 Corolla, 1.6 liter, 5 speed. I want to change the oil pan gasket and of course there's this aluminum "thing" that needs to be removed in order to get at the rest of the oil pan bolts. And of course, drop that crossmember, too.

Man, I get sick of working on these $%^#$& cars!!!!!!!! Wish I were rich and I'd just pay someone to cart my fata$$ around. :-)

Anyway, suggestions on doing this? Thanks.

I'm trying to get the oil pan off the car, but there's an aluminum "cover" bolted to teh driver's side, preventing me from getting at those oil pan bolts.

Last time I drop my oil pan I did not bring down the crosmember, I just losen some of the bolt so can pivot abit but its enough to bring the pan down.

As for the aluminium "thing" is it a heat shield?I can't remember any thing that block the oil pan bolt?

when you put back the pan just remember not to over thight the bolt, Im over done it and I broke the bolt its only one but so far it did't leak...

All of it Corolla does not appear to be a car that is too hard to work on.

Ok, so I get the pan off, and notice there's "some metal" in the bottom of the pan. WTF??? Jasper reman, with about 90,000 miles on it. I've owned the car for about a year, and it has been a good runner and hardly uses any oil. Maybe half a quart every 5000 miles......not kidding.

But when I bought it, noticed the temperature guage was reading lower than my other Corolla, so put in a new thermostat. Changing the thermostat brought the temp up in the guage where my other one runs.

Anyway, what I never did like was how it started, especially after the car was warmed up, you'd shut if off, run into the grocery store or something (say 15 minutes or so), and then restart it. Sounded like the engine was running without oil for a split second on the initial start. Most noticeable during this scenerio.

So, being the type of person I am, i just had to try and figure out why this thing "sounds dry" for a split second under certain instances when you start it. Tried a couple different oil filters, decent oil (Quaker State Full Synthetic 10-30) and that didn't change anything. So my next step was to look at the oil pickup screen, but I wasn't prepared to see the metal in the bottom of the oil pan. :-(

i think i mentioned I bought it about a year ago, and have put about 30,000 miles on it the last year. Yeah, lots and lots of driving and its been a good runner.........so far.

But the metal in the bottom of the oil pan bothers me.

that aluminum 'thing' is a brace between the trans and engine to help make it more rigid...I think. the 7afe has an upper pan which serves that purpose.

sorry about the metal, whats it look like? post a photo. could be a weak oil pump and you may be able to get away with just replacing the oil pump. send a sample of your engine oil out to be analyzed...i like blackstone. they can tell you what metals are too high and what it could suggest. you should also take a peek at the rod and main bearings, atleast one of each the furthest from the oil pump.

iirc jasper has a 3yr 100k warranty standard on their engines. you may fall inside of that? but iirc also...you had to transfer the warranty when you bought it. get the engine number off the tag on it (somewhere) and call them to see if they can be of any help to you. they may pay for what part you replace or split part of the cost if you take it to a repair shop.
