starter going? igintion? or battery?

When I turn the key, sometimes there is no response. It's getting more frequent.

Turn the key again and it starts (sometimes 3 or 4 trys). Battery is 4 years old.
I don't think it's the battery

Any suggestions?

I would try the starter on this one, but get a battery off a friend first to eliminate that chance first

This thread should come in handy for you:

http://www.toyotanation.com/forum/t237757.html

There should also be a step by step guide on autozone.com.

Alternatively, there are instructions in the Haynes manual, as follows:

1. Detach the cable from the negative terminal of the battery.
2. Remove the battery from the engine compartment.
3. If your car is equipped with cruise control, remove the cruise control assembly.
4. Detach the electrical connectors from the starter/solenoid assembly.
5. Remove the starter motor mounting bolts (see the illustration I posted below).
6. Remove the bracket from the upper section of the starter/solenoid assembly. Note: It is necessary to loosen one or two of the bracket bolts to allow the starter/solenoid assembly to partially drop to gain access to the remaining bracket assembly bolts and hardware.

Here's the illustration I just scanned straight from the manual:

Before you tear into it, REMOVE and CLEAN your battery terminals.

If that doesnt make a change, then remove the starter and you'll probably end up replacing the solenoid.

To add to this, if it either works or it doesn't (IE no inbetween weak starting) you could have a ground wire loose or broken on the starter.

ok, I pulled the battery, and removed the air cleaner.

Where is the starter? I feel really dumb for asking this, but I do not see it.

what is it under or next to that will make it easy for me to see?

thanks

is the starter on the lower front of engine?

I removed the air cleaner and battery, and there is nothing that looks like a starter underneath the stuff I just removed.

Normally if a starter begins to go bad, you should hear click click click when trying to start the car. Check your alternator as well. Once you get the car to start and idle, unplug the battery's negative terminal and see if the car keeps idling, if it does, then the alternator is ok. IF car dies, then the alternator is the main culprit.

No response sounds more and more like a dead battery. But in the event it is the starter, and this is after you have checked terminals to the battery to make sure they are clean and tighten properly, you can either replace the starter or most times you can get away with just replacing the starter contacts. they are a much cheaper solution. The starter still needs to be removed to do the job. Contacts shouldn't run more than $20.00. should you need some or the starter just let me know

Good luck.

New battery. Yes, car does go click , click, click.

My question that I am asking, is...now that battery and air cleaner is removed,

WHERE IS THE STARTER???

I see nothing under the air cleaner that remotely even looks like a starter!!!

HEEEELPPP

Ok I'll try following that again.
This morning when I checked it, positive cable is wrapped in plastic tubing, and splits off in a few directions, but all behind the engine.

ok, spent most of evening again trying to trace one of many wires coming off of positive side of battery.
i can trace a wire until it disappears because something else big is in the way..then the trace is lost.

dumbing this all down for me, what direction can point me in to find the bloody starter?

nothing, repeat NOTHING looks like a starter to me in this ^%&%^ car!!

please, were is the starter located on engine compartment on the 1.6 corolla??

is it..
a) between the radiator and front of engine
b) do I remove bottom plastic from under vehicle and try to find it under the car
c) is it behind the engine between firewall and engine

I am most beyond frustrated at this point
