96 Corolla Help

Hey everyone,

So I recently came into ownership of a 96 corolla it's in good shape, works fine. Although it lacks pick up, especially on hills. I don't know much about cars but would like to learn. Is there any easy way to work on its pick up? Whether it's tune up or replacing parts etc.

Any help would be appreciated.

Well, if it's a 3 speed (or even a 4 speed) these cars are going to loose speed on hills if you don't floor it to make it downshift. Unless the car is getting poor MPGs, running poorly at idle, there is nothing wrong. IF you want a little more power you can put in a K&N air filter element (around $40-50) and put in a higher flow exhaust system (less restrict muffler and better headers) but the issue is more with the gearing than the power of the car.

The first thing to do is a leakdown test. This will tell you EVERYTHING about the condition of internal parts and you can calculate a percentage of leakdown to compare cylinders. After you know the internals are OK then you can work on some tuning or maintenance to get a little more getup and go.

do you know when your car had its last tune up? if it works fine that maybe what it needs if the tune up is due.
