96 Corolla, remanned tranny bad speedometer

After 217K miles, the tranny went out. I just got a remanned transmission put in.

I took it for a drive down the interstate and everything was fine. Got gas. Then drove thru city and then on a state road to get home. I was going about 50 when I hit the gas for a second. It dropped into passing gear for not even a second and I let off the gas.

Maybe 30 seconds later, I noticed the speedometer wasn't working. Then when I got into town, I noticed that I could hear a revving noise as I accelerated that I didn't hear before. Drove around town (at 25mph max) and then the "Check Engine" light came on. When I parked it, it could barely idle.

Took it back to the mechanic who installed the remanned tranny and I have to wait to see what he says.

Any ideas? Is the tranny bad?

My guess is the vehicle speed sensor somehow jumped a gear (it's gear driven off the differential) and getting ruined, and your mechanic would find a P0500 among other things.

This would be weird as hell but I would not rule it out. I also suspect a faulty VSS if the speedometer stopped working, but I wouldn't expect this to cause other issues with how the car actually runs (never did on my 93, but it was OBDI not OBDII).
