annoying squeaking noise

i am pretty sure there is something wrong with my power steering belt, if there is anything like this in corollas
but the problem is that when i start my car i hear this really loud squeaking noise, and the steering is so hard to move. then if i start moving my car it gets softer but if the car is idle it is almost impossible to move the steering.

and the noise continues non stop. it stops after some time but then again if i make a turn it starts again

so what could be the possible problem
i checked the steering fluid and also the belts looks okey to me

PS
i have a 97 corolla

hi... if I may give a comment here...
it seems that you have answered ur question by yourself.
You really have a power steering problem, especially if the belts are in good condition.
Kindly visit the authorized Toyota service center nearby or other trusted auto service in your area.
And your lovely car will run as smooth as before.

yip like kevin said you can do that. but if your belts are good by goin with what you say then it could eather be your power steering fluid housing needs cleaning or you may need a steering rack.

Sounds like the belt is slipping to such an extent it's not driving the belt. Tighten up both the PS belt and Alternator/Water Pump belt before sending it to a shop.

Good thing you are taking it to a shop. You SHOULD know you cant judge belt tension by looking at it.
