Before playing with timing, make sure the engine is getting a spark and that the plug wires are connected to the correct cylinder/distributor terminal.

When you say it was timed the same as it was before doing the head gasket, do you mean it's in the exact same spot (crank and cam were put in the same position after installation as they were before?

Check check and recheck EVERYTHING you did while changing the head gasket.

Since it ran before, its something you did different to make it not run now. Forgetting a connector or not plugging it in fully is most probable, while something like a 180 deg. out distributor would be next.

ive tried to put the dist back in thinking it as 180 out but i cant get it to go in to the slot in the cam trying that, and i double checked everything when i put back together. i know its getting spark it will try to start for a second then back to not even trying, after it has flooded with gas. will the dist go in 180 out? all the wires are in their proper spots. it goes 1-4 starting on the passenger side right? and everything was put back in the exact spot it was when i pulled it apart as far as the timing goes
